What Agencies Look For in a First Screening

The first screening is where your profile and videos speak for you. Here is what casting staff pay attention to - and how AI helps them without making the decision.

The first screening, in short

When you apply to an audition, casting staff usually meet you first through your profile: your photos, your 30-60 second videos and the details you filled in. There is no chance to explain yourself in the room yet, so everything has to be clear on screen. The good news: most of what matters is within your control.

What casting staff pay attention to

1. The first few seconds

Staff often review many applicants in one sitting. Your opening seconds set the tone, so start with a clean slate (name, age, country, position) and move quickly into your strongest material. A long intro or a slow build can mean your best moment is never seen.

2. Fundamentals over polish

A perfectly edited video is not the goal. Agencies look for the basics they can build on:

  • Vocal: stable pitch, breath control, a tone that is recognisably yours.
  • Dance: rhythm, clean lines, control of the body and the ability to hit accents.
  • Rap: flow, timing and clear delivery.

Raw but solid beats polished but hollow. Training can add polish; it is much harder to add fundamentals later.

3. Clear photos, no filters

Photos should show exactly what you look like today:

  • A clear front-facing face photo in natural light.
  • A full-body photo that shows your proportions and posture.
  • No beauty filters, heavy retouching or strong make-up that hides your features.

4. Consistency between photos and video

Staff compare your photos with your videos. If they look like two different people, it creates doubt. Keep hair, styling and lighting reasonably similar, and replace photos that are more than a few months old.

5. Stage presence and eye contact

Even in a small room, performance is communication. Look into the lens, let your expression follow the song and finish every move with intention. Presence is often what makes a viewer watch to the end.

6. Growth potential

A first screening is not only about who you are today. Staff also look for signs of how you might develop: your age, how much you have trained so far, and the progress you can show. Uploading practice videos over time helps make that growth visible.

7. A complete profile

Missing fields slow everything down. Fill in your positions, languages, height and a short bio, and add at least two performance videos. A complete profile is easier to consider and easier to match to the right audition.

8. Honest information

Always give your real age, height and experience. Details are checked at later stages, and trust is hard to rebuild once it is lost. If you are under 18, your guardian's consent is part of an honest, complete application.

How AI first-screening helps - and where it stops

Partner agencies on PIVOT410 can receive an AI first-screening report. It is designed to assist casting staff, not replace them:

  • It checks basic fit with the audition's requirements, such as age range and positions.
  • It analyses photos and videos and organises applicants so staff can find the profiles most relevant to what they are looking for.
  • It points out whether a profile is complete or still needs more detail.

What it does not do: it does not reject anyone on its own, and it does not rate how attractive someone is. People make every casting decision. The AI simply helps staff spend their time watching the videos that matter most - including yours, if your profile is clear and complete.

Checklist before you apply

  • My slate is short and my best part comes early
  • My videos show fundamentals clearly, without filters or auto-tune
  • I have a recent front-facing face photo and a full-body photo
  • My photos and videos look like the same person today
  • Positions, languages, height and bio are filled in
  • Everything I entered is accurate
  • If I am under 18, my guardian's details and consent are added

Next step: polish your profile in My profile, then find an audition that fits you.
